As part of the National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, the Special Services Library loans recorded materials and Braille materials to state residents who are unable to read or use standard print due to impairment, visual or physical, or reading disability.

Qualify and Apply for Services

If you or someone you know are unable to use standard printed materials due to an impairment. This impairment can be visual, physical, or a documented reading disability, please complete the application form. Print it and send the completed form to:

A list of eligible professionals who may certify the application is provided. Please keep in mind that it is a federal requirement that all individuals with a reading disability have their application signed by a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy.

  • plays (ANSI/NISO Z39.86:2002) digital talking books

  • plays AMR-WB+, MP3, and WAV audiofiles
  • has eight controls
  • includes a variable speed control that permits speeding up or slowing down playback speed without changing the pitch
  • is portable
  • is equipped with a rechargeable battery and an electrical cord
  • includes built-in audio instructions for using the digital machine

  • has thirteen controls, including a row of controls for setting and retrieving bookmarks and navigating through the structured levels of a book

Education Resource Complete
Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. Includes areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 2,100 journals, as well as full text for more than 1,200 journals.

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia
Includes a variety of subjects, brief biographies and pictures from 25,000 encyclopedia articles.

GreenFile
Focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment. Comprised of more than 600 scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports.

Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia (for Older Readers)

This full text database for elementary school students has an animated interface with a dinosaur theme that encourages students to search by topic.

TOPICSearch
Current events database. Covers popular topics in the news. Explores social, political and economic issues and scientific discoveries.

Provides addresses and telephone numbers for 30 million US businesses and 220 million US residents. Business entries include officers, sales, industry profiles, and web sites if available.

African American Studies Center
Documents contributions persons of African descent have made on America since their arrival here in the 1600s. Include history, biography, art, architecture, literature, and women study resources and encyclopedias focusing on African American heritage and lives. Provides 100 primary sources, maps, timelines, images, charts, tables and graphs.

American National Biography
Profiles over 17,400 deceased individuals whose lives have shaped the United States. Includes famous, not so famous, and infamous people from all walks of life from the earliest times to present day. Portrays the social, cultural, economic, political, military and popular history of America.

Biography In Context 

600,000 biographies on 525,000 people. Updated daily. Integrates reference material, periodical articles, and multimedia content.

Provides over 500,000 biographies for individuals from antiquity through today.
 
Birds of North America Online
Describes 716 bird species in the US and Canada. Includes characteristics, migration, habitat, breeding, etc. Contains images, videos, audible bird songs and calls. Register as a patron to get a username and password.

 

Children’s Core Collection 
A selective annotated list of fiction and nonfiction books and magazines for children from preschool through sixth grade, along with review sources and other professional aids for children's librarians and school media specialists.

College Blue Book
Contains narrative profiles, tabular data and list of degree programs for 2-year and 4 year colleges and distance learning programs. Also lists colleges by degrees offered.

Columbia Gazetteer
Includes names, descriptions and characteristics of over 165,000 political or physical places in the world. Country essays contain maps and information on geography, economy, government, history and population.

Columbia Grangers World of Poetry - Reference Library Access
Columbia Grangers world of Poetry - Reference Library Access
Contains 250,000 poems in full text and 450,000 citations. The poems in full text are the most widely-read in the English language, as well as in Spanish, French, German, and Italian. Included also is poetry in Portuguese, Polish, Yiddish, Welsh, Gaelic, and other Celtic languages, as well as poems in the ancient languages: Anglo-Saxon, Provencal and Latin.

CQ Almanac  

Since 1946 CQ Almanac has been the definitive source for studying the U.S. Congress. The Almanac offers original narrative and every roll call on every major piece of legislation in each congressional session.

Dictionary of National Biography

Fiction Core Collection 
Delivers information on thousands of works of fiction for adults, either written in or translated into English. Entries provide complete bibliographic data, price, a descriptive annotation, notes about related works, and evaluative quotations from a review when available.

Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law

International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences
Covers scholarship and fields that have emerged and matured since the publication of the original international edition. Highlights the expanding influence of economics in social science research and features new articles and biographies contributed by scholars from around the world on a wide array of global topics in the social sciences.

Library Literature & Information Science Full Text 
Indexes articles and book reviews of key library and information science periodicals published in the US and elsewhere from 1984. Full text coverage for selected periodicals also included from 1994. Books, conference proceedings, library school theses, and pamphlets also indexed.

Public Library Core Collection: Non-fiction 
Guide to building and maintaining a well-rounded collection of the most highly recommended reference and non-fiction books for adults. Entries provide complete bibliographic data, price, subject headings, a descriptive annotation, and evaluative quotations from a review when available, plus information on electronic editions of works where available.

Readers Guide Retrospective
Provides indexing of general-interest periodicals published in the United States and reflects the history of 20th century America.

Reference Guide to World Literature
Covers non-English literature from Homer to Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Provides biographical information on 500 writers and critcal essays on 550 literary works.

Religious Collection
Emphasizes religion’s role in everyday life and from culture to culture. Explores the relationship between religion and science. Includes Catholic theology and Jewish theology, history, law, people, etc.

Senior High School Core Collection
This selective list of books recommended for young people in grades 9 through 12 will prove invaluable for collection development and maintenance, readers' advisory, and curriculum support in the high school library. Something About the Author Online
An easy-to-use source for librarians, students and other researchers, each volume of this series provides illustrated biographical articles on approximately 70 children's authors and artists. The series covers more than 10,000 individuals, ranging from established award winners to authors and illustrators who are just beginning their careers.

Visual Thesaurus
An Interactive dictionary and thesaurus that creates visual word maps that illustrates various meanings and related words.

West Encyclopedia of American Law
Comprehensive overview of American law. Covers legal issues, events, movements, concepts, court cases, biographies, definitions, impact of laws and court decisions, etc.

Writers Directory, 2010
Features bibliographical, biographical and contact information for living authors worldwide who have at least one English publication. Entries include name, pseudonyms, addresses, citizenship, birth date, specialization, career information and a bibliography.
